Dankmarshausen, Thuringia – former restricted zone of the GDR. In the conversation, Thrän discusses her parents' thoughts on fleeing to West Germany in 1985/86. The piece “Let's go over there” is about a multi-layered identity and origin and the German past processed in experimental documentary work.
What is the meaning of borders? What shapes people who want to avoid human rights violations and violent conflicts? According to the WHO report 2022, “a person who flees their homeland usually has no future prospects or is in a life-threatening situation”.
Central to the piece is the perception of the parents who grew up under a dictatorship for the first 30 years of their lives.
How is these shared embodied knowledge inscribed in life and what trauma is passed on to the following generations? The importance of listening and empathizing for a collective embodied memory of German history, beyond the sense of imprisonment and borders.
